Charles Barkley, Fox News Trade Pre-Election Shots
TNT basketball analyst and former NBA star Charles Barkley calls Fox News Channel "corrupt," Fox News dismisses Barkley as a "shill" for CNN
By Ben Grossman -- Broadcasting & Cable, 10/29/2008 1:00:00 AMFormer NBA star, current TNT basketball analyst and possible future Alabama gubernatorial candidate Charles Barkley says he is no fan of Fox News Channel.“I watch CNN, they’re not fucked up like Fox,” Barkley told B&C. “They are a mouthpiece for the Republican Party. I watch [Fox] a couple times when there is someone I want to see on there. But they’re corrupt."When asked whether he is just shilling for his parent company (TNT and CNN are corporate cousins), Barkley denies that he has to stick up for his team.“Hell no, I don’t,” he says. “I like Wolf Blitzer and Anderson Cooper and John King. They at least try to give both sides.”But Fox News Channel doesn’t see it that way, as a network spokesperson fired back immediately.“It’s hardly a surprise that Charles is a shill for a Turner owned network.... He obviously needs the steady paycheck to pay off his consistent gambling debts,” the spokesperson told B&C.Barkley in May said he was at least temporarily putting on hold a gambling habit that he once told ESPN has cost him about $10 million over the years. Earlier this year, a hotel in Las Vegas alleged that Barkley had failed to repay casino markers. The longtime NBA star, who is now a colorful NBA analyst for TNT, is backing Barack Obama for President, and thinks he is going to win.“I do, but it’s gonna be close,” he says.

Do you all think he is correct in saying that Fox News is corrupt and only reveals a republican point of view? I agree with Sir Charles this time because I often find myself watching the Fox News Channel and being so frustrated that I almost break my remote control. My frustrations stem from the fact that when the Fox News anchors, like the infamous Bill O'Reily, have liberals or democrats on their show, they'll ask them a question and won't allow them to complete it because it goes against their views or it is simply the truth that they don't want the public to hear. Fox News has to go!!! How do you feel about it??
Hey Landon, I'll agree that Fox News leans to the right, but isn't this pretty much a known fact? I'm not saying I support them, but can't we say the same thing that other networks like CNN lean to the liberal side? I've seen plenty of times when CNN has a conservative guest on and the same thing happens to them when they're interviewed by Anderson Cooper or someone...
No matter what people say, different networks are going to be either liberal or conservative, but I think most viewers will realize this and change the channel if they don't like it or don't agree with it.
I agree with what Brian said. It is no hidden notion that Fox News is terribly slanted, and they skew their stories in favor of conservatism. In the same manner, there are other networks that lean to the liberal side. However, while this may be my own personal opinion, I feel like Fox News fabricates stories more than CNN and those networks, who just present a more liberal point-of-view. The best thing to do is to simply read up on the issues, and form your own opinions. Otherwise, no matter who you are watching, you will be getting a slanted opinion. Then, once you form your own viewpoint, you can begin to seek out more information and find the networks that you like.
FOX news is clearly geared toward the republican point of view. We watched a video in COM 417, and former employees of FOX were saying how they were scolded at times for being to open, or shedding to much light to the democratic view. They were nearly instructed, sometimes blatantly to make any dealing with a democrat look bad.
I am also very disappointed in the fact that these major networks such as FOX and TNT favor a specific side of the story. I think they do this because it is part of their business. I think if they're responsible they would all expose both sides if not all sides of a story, conservative and liberal. They might argue that it might take more time to get various interviews or it might not please their sponsors, but if you offer a reliable product to the people such as unbiased news, then the community will take care of you.
