Facebook and Twitter grow more than 100%

As we all know, social networking sites such as facebook and twitter are becoming the future of communication as we know it. Both facebook and twitter raised their visitor counts by more than 100% from 2008 to 2009. In May 2009, facebook surged to the number one position among social networks and by December of 2009 it had 112 million visitors. In 2009, Twitter jumped from 4 million visitors to 17 million visitors between the months of Febuary and April, and his been growing since.

These sites are not only gaining users, but also gaining the amount of time spent on these sites by users. Facebook has grown to account for three times as much total time spent online as it did in 2008. Social networking accounts for 11% of all time spent online in the US, making it one of the most popular online activities. Facebook is even very popular among adults of all ages, more so than other sites such as myspace and twitter. According to recent data from Pew Internet & American Life Project, 73% of all adults who use social networking sites have a facebook account. As far as myspace, only 36% of social networking adults ages 30 and older have an account. So the younger generation is more apt to myspace. These networking sites are growing rapidly and have been of much use in regards to media and communication. To you bloggers, what are your views on this? Is this a good or bad thing? Why?

I think that these two tools are here to stay. They are at a point now where anything that any other small company can come up with they can easily and more productively replicate on their own sites.
Facebook for friends, and Twitter for business.

This article raises questions as far as, how much longer will these sites continue to expand? And how much longer will users continue to use social networking sites before they become too bored with it, or no longer communicate effectively in person.

Eventually, I believe communication skills and interpersonal relationships will suffer and will no longer help society function together nor be subsititued by technology. This will ultimately dumb down society with time because quality on social networking sites seem to be lacking.

On the other hand, the social networking sites facilitate easier advertising and help to desiminate information more quickly.

This does help market technology such as the Iphone, Ipads, Blackberry's, and more. It will be interesting to see how these social networking sites and technology will continue unfold.

I think it is not a good thing because now all people's life stuck those facebook or twitter etc. I personally don't have facebook because I believe that now it is just get out its purpose. Now people more likely to communicate each other from those kinds of social networks. I certainly agree Casendra about interpersonal relationships will suffer and will no longer help society function. That is very true. I am afraid people will forget speaking soon if it goes like that !

Next-Generation Facebook!!!! With Facebook's new found popularity I feel employees of social networking sites are looking to push the envelope, and merge with ANYONE for profit. For instance,Portalarium a game designer is giving away the suite of tools so that it will be easy to cross-promote games that are made with its tools on social networks such as Facebook, making it easy to discover new games.
Portalarium’s games will be linked to each other and have built-in cross promotion. Players will be able to easily share their games with other players on a site as viral as facebook.

I happen to be a creature of habit and miss the original facebook i grew familiar with, and personally I cant stand the changes its implemented especially the "best friend quiz" you name it. but just when you thought it was the end...Its only just getting started
