Google Voice

Have you heard about Google Voice yet? This new application by Google offers such great services as
  • Voicemail transcription to text
  • One phone number for all your lines (ie. work, cell, home)
  • Personalized greetings for individual callers or groups of callers. (You can still keep that cool Meatwadd voicemessage for your friends without being embarrassed at work)
  • Inexpensive international calling.
  • You can screen your callers by sending them to voicemail and having the ability to answer at any time during their recording
  • Easy conference calling through your cell phone.
  • And the best thing of all: IT'S FREE!
Check out the Google Voice Youtube page for run-downs of the different applications.

I like this idea, and the fact that it is an App, which can be downloaded on an assortment of devices. I hate listening to voice mails. My phone makes me listen to the messages I deleted last time I called then it will let me listen to new messages. Therefore, I could greatly appreciate an application such as this. Here is the resource I found with more information on this application: http://tinyurl.com/lfva4h

This application sounds too fabulous to work flawlessly so I also sought out reviews of this application. http://tinyurl.com/deurf3

It reports flaws with the voicemail system as well as issues subscribing with you current number. Therefore, you must obtain a Google phone number and it increases difficulty when friends try to return your call from their caller id log. The article also states that this application is only currently available to consumers who previously signed up for GrandCentral. My first link contained a link, which allowed you to be invited to the service. I curiously clicked the link and there was an error on the page.

This unification of communications via multiple technological options, is a positive step for consumers. As a student, I would enjoy being able to check my voicemails as a text message while in class, if a family member calls. I do believe I will keep an eye out for when this application becomes more widely available.

I like the idea of being able to receive voicemails via text message because it can get annoying to check voicemails all the time. Although, my question would be how do you know for sure it decoded the words correctly? There are so many different accents that it can be hard to know exactly what people are saying unless you hear the voicemail. Also, this is just another way to take away from the importance of socialization in the world. In my opinion with this application people will rely even more on technology than human interaction.

Overall I would not like this because having a home number and cell number is so some people cannot get a hold of me 24/7. If I used Google Voice it would be a year or two so they could work out the the major flaws that Kylie pointed out. In some of the articles I read Apple originally rejected this idea from Google or they were wanting to "study" the application more. I'll be interested to see what comes of Google Voice in the next few months.
