Avatar DVD release

Avatar was released on DVD and BlueRay this week. It is still maintaining its popularity by bringing in 6.7 million dollars in rentals so far. I am suprised that the DVD is so popular without it being the 3D version that most people saw in the theatres. Fox spokesman still haven't made an announcement about a possible 3D release of this movie. Do you think a 3D release would be as popular or even more popular? Should the executives wait so long before releasing it in hopes that the popularity doesn't wear off? Also how will the home 3D experience differ from that in the movie theatre?

I think they will come out with a 3D DVD sometime soon. If you think about 3D television viewing similar to the way people thought about LED TVs and hi-definition when it first came out, there is a large opportunity for growth. A movie like Avatar, which so many people around the world saw would be a good way to jumpstart 3D television. Will they make a ton of money off of it? I don't think so, but they will probably be charging at least over $30 for a 3D DVD (or maybe a 3DVD??? Catchy, no?) since I believe that is about the cost of a Blu-Ray. I also think there may be a packaging deal in the works where you can buy a 3D TV and get a free 3D copy of Avatar, or if you buy Avatar in 3D you get a coupon for the TV.

One thing I am unsure of, though: Will you need to purchase a 3DVD player in order to play those DVDs? Or will a regular DVD player work?

I was also surprised to see that the DVD of Avatar was in such high demand without being 3D but there are a few reasons for this issue I believe. I think that many people not having the 3D capabilities would much rather see the video without 3D than not because of its detailed views. with such a great movie like Avatar I was not really surprised to see that the movie sales were high but it seems a little tricky to me to try to sale a movie that intense not in 3D and get a great turn out. I think the real issues with sales is not what the movie has but the demand behind it. I also think since our world revolves around popularity and hight demand things many people probably bought the movie to just have the movie. So the real question to me is what is the true reason why we have such a big sale on the movies like this and why people tend to buy things just because they are popular or high demand. I do think that the reasoning behind these high movie turn outs can relate to the whole Long Tail idea and this is because it is simply a new way of viewing something.

I heard through my work at Hollywood Video that the 3D version should be released in November. I see this as a calculated business move. The production company is banking on the hope that fans will buy the 2D version now, and the 3D version later. I also see this hold on the 3D release as a timing strategy. Releasing it in November, holiday season, ensures better sales. Also, 3D TVs will be big this holiday season, and I wouldn't be surprised to see Avatar in a TV bundle pack (free with 3D TV purchase).
