Twitter To Put Ads On 'Promoted Tweets'

Saying that its "simple service" will be "non-traditional ... easy .. (and) makes a ton of sense," Twitter this morning has confirmed that it is joining the ranks of websites that hope to make money from advertising.

According to Twitter:

"You will start to see Tweets promoted by our partner advertisers called out at the top of some Twitter.com search results pages. We strongly believe that Promoted Tweets should be useful to you. We'll attempt to measure whether the Tweets resonate with users and stop showing Promoted Tweets that don't resonate. Promoted Tweets will be clearly labeled as "promoted" when an advertiser is paying, but in every other respect they will first exist as regular Tweets and will be organically sent to the timelines of those who follow a brand."

Thoughs and comments?

Here is a little data I collected from BNET discussing the status of Twitter. TechCrucnh reports Twitter has an estimate of 60 million users. If Twitter becomes a "grown-up business" and sells ads, it would generate a revenue stream that would allow investors to calculate how much the company is worth.
The company’s expenses may be as much as $20 million annually, Bloomberg said, so that $5 million “profit” will not go very far toward paying back the $155 million it owes its investors. A big question mark hangs over Twitter’s ability to turn itself into a real business. There is some talk of charging for advanced features — but really, do you know anyone who would pay for Twitter? Me neither.

At the same time, everyone else is doing the obvious: Using Twitter as an ad medium, and profiting handsomely. Kim Kardashian makes $10,000 per tweet, the Daily Mail reports, for clients such as Reebok EasyTone and Carl’s Jr.

I think this a good way for Twitter to make some real money but it also saddens me. I used to love facebook a lot more when it was just college students and a few high schoolers. Then it picked up more and more and got all the ad revenue and its become a big sales game. I enjoyed the simplicity of facebook that is no more and now this is going to start happening to twitter. MySpace got so complicated and everyone went to the simple alternative of facebook and now more and more people are turning to twitter. Twitter might want to stop while they are ahead and keep the nice simplicity.

Also in regards to celebs that get paid to twitter more and more celebs are. In addition to Kim Kardashian there is Nicole Richie, Audriana Patridge, Channing Tatum, Soulja Boy, and Kendra Wilkerson just to name a few because there are many more. Most of the people on the list are more of a reality show/socialite celebrity status. It is just one of the many ways they are making money and becoming famous without having much of a reason behind it.
