Ad War: Google Places vs. Facebook Places

The week of August 20, Facebook Places was launched. It is an application through Facebook that when a user updates their status, it lets others know specifically where they are. Facebook is hoping that the application will help them gain the ad business of local, small businesses. The idea was modified from Google Places, which launched in April and offers listings from local businesses, including street-level images. But because of Facebook, according to eMarketer, accounts for half of all social network advertising, Google has some huge competition.

Even though Facebook has a great idea by using Facebook Places to get the advertising of self-owned businesses in the local area, I do believe that users of Facebook would not want their every move shown through their updates.  It may feel like a small invasion of privacy for the user.
